Approximately 3 inch purchase size. Mixed males and females.
The Red Head Tapajo was first collected in 1991 from Rio Tapajos in eastern Brazil. They are from the Geophagus genus which is Latin for earth eater. They get this name because they take in mouthfuls of sand, and sift through it for edible items. Then expel the remaining material out of their gills and mouth. This makes for very fascinating behavior and is really enjoyable to watch in the aquarium. They will take food from the middle and upper water column when it's feeding time, then will resume to sifting through sand. Even as adults, they should be fed smaller high quality food since they have trouble ingesting larger food items. They can max out at almost 10 inches, even at this size they are relatively peaceful. Minimum tank size for adults is 90 gallons. These fish love to be in groups, we sell them in groups of 6 for this reason.
