Blyxa Japonica Plant Profile

Blyxa japonica is considered a mid or foreground plant, growing between 4-8 inches (10-20 cm). It does require some special care. But overall, generally an easy to moderate plant to maintain.

  1. Lighting: Blyxa japonica can be grown in medium lighting conditions. However for optimal growth, high light is recommended.

  2. Water parameters: Blyxa japonica prefers slightly acidic to neutral water conditions with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5. The water hardness should be between 2 to 8 dKH, and the temperature should be between 70°F to 82°F.

  3. Substrate: This plant prefers a nutrient-rich substrate to thrive. You can use nutrient-rich substrates like aqua soil or eco-complete to provide the necessary nutrients for growth. Another option is to add root tabs to the substrate.

  4. CO2: Blyxa japonica does not require carbon dioxide (CO2) supplementation to grow. However introducing CO2, whether injected or in liquid form, such as Easy Carbon, will greatly increase your growth rate and color.

  5. Fertilization: In addition to the nutrients provided by the substrate, Blyxa japonica also benefits from regular fertilization. You can use a liquid fertilizer that is rich in iron and other trace elements to ensure healthy growth.

  6. Pruning: Blyxa japonica can be a fast-growing plant and can quickly outgrow its space in the aquarium. It is essential to trim it regularly to prevent it from overshadowing other plants in the tank. You can use sharp scissors to trim the plant back to the desired length.

  7. Propagation: Blyxa Japonica will grow side shoots that you can separate and replant.

By following these care guidelines, you can ensure that your Blyxa japonica plant thrives and adds a beautiful touch to your aquarium.
