Ruby Tetra: A Comprehensive Guide (Axelrodia riesei)
The Ruby Tetra (Axelrodia riesei) is one of those fish that makes you stop mid-scroll when you see it done right. It’s tiny—but that deep ruby-red body pops in a way most nano fish just don’t.
It gets compared to Ember Tetras a lot, but this is a different vibe. Where embers are orange and soft, Ruby Tetras are deeper, richer, and more “glow from within” red—especially in darker, natural setups.
They’re still pretty uncommon in the hobby, but they’re one of those fish that, once you keep them, you start wondering why they aren’t everywhere.
Natural Distribution & Habitat
Axelrodia riesei is native to northern South America, primarily:
- Colombia
- Likely within Orinoco-influenced systems and nearby tributaries
They’re typically found in:
- Slow-moving streams
- Blackwater or tannin-stained environments
- Areas with leaf litter and submerged wood
Think:
- Soft, acidic water
- Dim lighting
- Lots of organic material
This is a classic blackwater nano fish.
Size
They stay very small.
- Adult size: ~0.75–1 inch
This is true nano territory.
Aquarium Care
This is a fish that rewards a thoughtful setup.
- Tank size: 10 gallons minimum (bigger is better for a group)
- Substrate: Sand or dark substrate
- Aquascape: Wood, leaf litter, plants
- Lighting: Low to moderate (dimmer = better color)
They look their best in:
👉 Darker tanks
👉 Blackwater-style setups
👉 Tanks with contrast (dark background, plants, wood)
They can work in brighter planted tanks, but you won’t get that same deep red.
Water Parameters
They prefer softer, more natural conditions.
- Temperature: 74–80°F
- pH: 5.0–7.0
- Hardness: Soft
They’re not extremely fragile, but they definitely do best in:

👉 Lower stress environments
Diet
Because of their size, food matters.
They’ll take:
- Micro pellets
- Crushed flake
- Frozen foods (baby brine shrimp, cyclops)
- Live foods (great for color and conditioning)
Small food size is key.
Behavior & Tank Mates
Ruby Tetras are:
- Peaceful
- Slightly shy at first
- Tight schoolers once settled
Best kept in:
- Groups of 10–15+ (bigger groups = better behavior and color)
Tank mates:
- Other nano fish
- Small rasboras
- Corydoras (smaller species)
- Shrimp
Avoid:
- Larger or aggressive fish
- Hyperactive tank mates
They stay mostly in the midwater, often hovering in a group.
What Makes Them Special
This is a “less is more” fish.
No crazy patterns. No flashy finnage.
Just:
👉 Solid, deep ruby-red coloration
👉 Clean body shape
👉 Tight schooling behavior

Not bright neon—more like a rich, natural red that looks almost unreal against dark backgrounds.
Breeding
Breeding isn’t super common in home setups, but they follow typical tetra behavior.
- Egg scatterers
- Eggs laid among fine plants or moss
- No parental care
To attempt breeding:
- Very soft water
- Dim lighting
- Fine-leaved plants or spawning mops
Fry are extremely small and require:
- Infusoria initially
- Then baby brine shrimp

They’re often overshadowed by Ember Tetras.
But they’re arguably more striking in the right setup.
They need a group to really show off.
Small groups tend to stay shy and washed out.
They’re a perfect “accent fish.”
Especially in darker aquascapes.
They don’t look their best in store tanks.
Like a lot of blackwater fish, they shine once settled.
