Pseudomugil Luminatus: A Comprehensive Guide

The Red Neon Blue-Eye (Pseudomugil luminatus) is one of those fish that just doesn’t make sense until you see it in person. It’s tiny—but somehow it looks like it’s glowing. Bright red/orange body, electric blue eyes, and those constantly flicking fins… it’s a ridiculous amount of color packed into a 1-inch fish.

This species showed up in the hobby relatively recently compared to other blue-eyes, and it didn’t take long for people to get hooked. It’s now one of the most sought-after nano fish—but for good reason.

If you’re into small, active, high-impact fish, this one is hard to beat.

Natural Distribution & Habitat

Pseudomugil luminatus is native to Indonesia, specifically:

  • The Timika region of West Papua

They’re found in:

  • Shallow streams
  • Swampy areas
  • Vegetation-rich waterways

Typical conditions:

  • Warm water
  • Slow to moderate flow
  • Dense plant growth
  • Clear to slightly tinted water

These are classic small, plant-heavy habitat fish.

Size

They stay tiny.

  • Adult size: ~0.75–1 inch

Perfect for nano setups—but they still need space to move.

Aquarium Care

These are pretty forgiving fish, but they really shine in the right setup.

  • Tank size: 10 gallons minimum (20+ is ideal for a proper group)
  • Aquascape: Heavily planted with open swimming pockets
  • Substrate: Sand or fine gravel
  • Lighting: Moderate to bright

They do especially well in:

👉 Slightly “messier” natural setups

They’re constantly moving, so give them space between plants to display.

They’re not overly sensitive, but like most small fish:

Diet

  • Larger fish

They occupy the upper to midwater and are almost always in motion.
