Pantodon buchholzi – A Comprehensive Guide (African Butterfly Fish)

The African Butterfly Fish, Pantodon buchholzi, is one of the most unique freshwater fish you can keep—and it barely even looks like a fish.

This thing is basically:

  • A floating ambush predator
  • With wing-like fins
  • That just… sits there… waiting

From above, it looks like an insect. From the side, it looks prehistoric. And when it strikes? It’s fast enough to make you jump the first time you see it.

This is not a “community centerpiece” in the traditional sense.

This species comes from West and Central Africa, where it inhabits:
