Brochis arcuata – A Comprehensive Guide (Skunk Cory)

The Skunk Cory, Brochis arcuata (formerly Corydoras arcuatus), is one of those fish that proves you don’t need crazy colors to stand out.

The bold stripes does all the work.

Running from the snout, across the back, and into the tail, that dark “skunk stripe” gives this fish a super clean, recognizable look that you can spot instantly across the tank.

It’s simple—but it’s sharp.
And when you get a group of them moving together, it looks even better.

Origin & Habitat

This species comes from the upper Amazon basin, including regions in Peru and surrounding areas.

In the wild, they’re found in:

  • Slow-moving tributaries
  • Flooded forest areas
  • Sandy or fine substrates

Typical conditions include:

  • Warm water
  • Soft, slightly acidic parameters
  • Leaf litter and submerged wood

Very standard Amazonian bottom-dweller habitat.

Size

  • Adult Size: ~2 to 2.5 inches
  • Body Type: Slightly more elongated than typical corys

They’ve got a bit of a sleeker profile compared to chunkier species.

Tank Size

  • Minimum Tank Size: 20 gallons
  • Recommended: 20–30 gallons

Like all corys:

  • Floor space matters
  • Group size matters more than individual stocking

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 73–79°F
  • pH: 6.0–7.2
  • Hardness: Soft to moderately soft

They do best in:

  • Clean, stable water
  • Slightly softer conditions

Temperament

  • Peaceful
  • Social
  • Non-aggressive

They should always be kept in groups.

Group size

  • Minimum: 6
  • Ideal: 8–12

In proper groups:

  • They’re more active
  • Less shy
  • Much more visible

Tank Setup

This is where they really pop visually.

Ideal setup

  • Fine sand substrate
  • Driftwood
  • Plants or botanicals
  • Moderate lighting

How to make them stand out

That stripe looks best when:

  • The substrate is lighter
  • There’s contrast in the tank
  • Lighting isn’t overly harsh

In the right setup, the stripe becomes very defined and clean.

Diet

Very easy to feed.

Staple foods

  • Sinking pellets
  • Bottom feeder wafers

For best condition

  • Frozen foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp)
  • Live foods when possible

As always:

Don’t rely on leftovers

Tank Mates

Great community fish.

Good tank mates

  • Tetras
  • Rasboras
  • Pencilfish
  • Dwarf cichlids
  • Other peaceful species

Avoid

  • Aggressive fish
  • Large predators
  • Highly competitive bottom feeders

Behavior

  • Bottom-dwelling
  • Constant foraging
  • Social group activity

They’ll:

  • Move together
  • Sift the substrate
  • Rest in groups

Very classic cory behavior—with a more streamlined look.

Breeding

Similar to other cory-type species.

Spawning basics

  • Egg layers
  • No parental care
  • Eggs placed on glass, plants, or decor

To trigger spawning:

  • Clean water
  • Heavy feeding
  • Slight temperature drops

Why They’re So Popular

Simple:
That stripe.

  • Clean, recognizable pattern
  • Looks great in groups
  • Easy to care for

They’re one of the few corys where the pattern alone makes them stand out across the room.

Final Thoughts

If you want:

  • A visually clean, recognizable cory
  • Easy care
  • A fish that looks great in groups

The Skunk Cory is a no-brainer.

It’s simple—but it’s one of the best-looking “simple” fish you can keep.
