8 Dwarf Cichlids We Actually Recommend (And Why)
There’s no shortage of dwarf cichlid lists out there… and most of them feel like they were written by someone who’s never actually kept half the fish on it.
So this isn’t that.
These are species we actually like. have kept, and would put in our own tanks again. Some are easy. Some aren’t. Some will make you question your life choices for a week or two… then turn into absolute showpieces.
Dwarf Flag Cichlid (Laetacara curviceps)
This is one of those fish that quietly earns your respect.
It’s not screaming for attention like an Apisto, but once it settles in, it’s just solid. Great personality, nice subtle coloration, and way more forgiving than people give it credit for.
What I like:
Peaceful for a cichlid, good for community setups if you’re not doing anything reckless.
Care basics:
- Size: ~3–4 inches
- Temp: 75–80°F
- pH: 6.0–7.5
- Behavior: Mild-mannered, but still a cichlid during breeding
Give them plants, some wood, and they’ll just… work.
Butterfly Cichlid (Anomalochromis thomasi)
This is one of the best “first cichlid” fish out there and nobody talks about it enough.
They’re hardy, adaptable, and don’t have that “I’m going to ruin your tank” energy some cichlids bring.
What I like:
They breed easily, are great parents, and don’t terrorize everything in sight.
Care basics:
- Size: ~3 inches
- Temp: 72–78°F
- pH: 6.0–7.5
- Behavior: Peaceful, even when breeding (relatively speaking)
If someone told me they wanted to try cichlids for the first time, this is near the top of the list.
Nanochromis splendens
This one’s underrated and honestly kind of slept on.
African dwarf cichlid, but not your typical krib-type fish. A bit more edge to them, a bit more attitude.
What I like:
Coloration is great, and they’ve got personality without being complete nightmares.
Care basics:
- Size: ~3 inches
- Temp: 75–80°F
- pH: 6.0–7.2
- Behavior: Semi-aggressive, especially in pairs
Give them structure. Caves, wood, line-of-sight breaks. Don’t just toss them in an open tank and hope for the best.
Golden Dwarf Cichlid (Nannacara anomala)
This is one of those fish where the females completely steal the show when breeding.
Bright yellow, aggressive in that “small but mean” way, and honestly just fun to watch.
What I like:
Super interesting breeding behavior. The male looks nice, the female looks better when it matters.
Care basics:
- Size: ~3 inches
- Temp: 75–82°F
- pH: 6.0–7.5
- Behavior: Peaceful… until they’re not (breeding flips the switch)
They’re tougher than people think. Not nearly as delicate as they’re sometimes made out to be.
Krobia xinguensis
This is where we start creeping into “slightly more advanced” territory.
Krobia are awesome, but they’re not your average beginner dwarf cichlid. They’ve got size, presence, and a bit more sensitivity.
What I like:
They feel like a mini Geophagus. Great movement, great interactions.
Care basics:
- Size: ~5 inches
- Temp: 76–82°F
- pH: 5.5–7.0
- Behavior: Peaceful but needs space
They appreciate cleaner water and a bit more attention to detail. Not hard… just not set-it-and-forget-it either.
Zebra Acara (Ivanacara adoketa)
Alright, now we’re getting serious.
Adoketa are one of the coolest dwarf cichlids you can keep… and also one of the ones that will humble you if you’re not paying attention.
What I like:
Incredible patterning, strong pair bonding, just a very “intentional” fish.
Care basics:
- Size: ~4–5 inches
- Temp: 78–84°F
- pH: 4.5–6.5 (yeah, actually low)
- Behavior: Territorial, especially as a pair
These are not beginner fish. They want soft, acidic water and consistency. If your tank swings all over the place, they’re going to let you know.
But if you get it right… they’re unreal.
Pelvicachromis drachenfelsi (“Taeniatus Wouri”)
One of the better Pelvicachromis options in my opinion.
Less overdone than your standard krib, and just a better-looking fish overall.
What I like:
Great colors, interesting behavior, and not as overbred as some other Pelvicachromis.
Care basics:
- Size: ~3–4 inches
- Temp: 75–80°F
- pH: 6.0–7.5
- Behavior: Pair-based, territorial when breeding
They’ll claim a cave and defend it like it’s their mortgage. Plan your tank around that.
Checkerboard Cichlid (Dicrossus maculatus)
This is one of those fish that looks delicate… and kind of is.
Not impossible, but definitely not something I’d recommend throwing into a random community tank and hoping for the best.
What I like:
The pattern is insane. One of the most unique-looking dwarf cichlids out there.
Care basics:
- Size: ~3 inches
- Temp: 78–84°F
- pH: 4.5–6.5
- Behavior: Peaceful, a bit shy
They do best in softer, more acidic setups. Think leaf litter, tannins, calmer environments.
Rush them, stress them, or throw them in with aggressive fish… and yeah, they’ll struggle.
So Which Ones Should You Actually Pick?
If you’re newer to dwarf cichlids:
- Laetacara curviceps
- Anomalochromis thomasi
- Nannacara anomala
If you’ve got some experience:
- Nanochromis splendens
- Pelvicachromis drachenfelsi
- Krobia xinguensis
If you want a challenge (and something really rewarding):
- Ivanacara adoketa
- Dicrossus maculatus
Final Thoughts
Dwarf cichlids are one of those groups where you can go as easy or as deep as you want.
You can keep something simple and enjoyable… or you can dial in water chemistry, behavior, breeding setups, the whole thing.
That’s kind of why we like them so much.
